‘I relied so much on the news of what you all were doing on the outside to fight for me and the other political prisoners. This kept me going,’ man says of support

There was a time, about eight years ago, when a woman from Elmvale sat on a concrete bench at a concrete table in the visiting area of a high-security prison in Honduras, surrounded by masked guards armed to the teeth, realizing she and her husband, his sister, and their two friends could be killed at any moment.

Karen Spring, who also holds citizenship in Honduras, was visiting her husband Edwin Espinal along with two others-each one political prisoners. The three men understood they would face death if they returned to their cells shared with violent offenders tied to organized crime.

With nowhere else to go, they remained in the visitor area with Karen and Edwin’s sister. That’s when armed guards burst in.

“Edwin’s sister looked terrified … she asked me, ‘aren’t you scared,’” Karen recalled. “Looking back now, I’m sure I was. But at that moment, fear wasn’t what I felt.

“I told her … there are so many people who would ask questions and fight for us if something were to happen,” said Karen, her voice briefly catching with emotion.

This past Sunday, Karen and Edwin found themselves back in Elmvale at a community hall filled with around 150 people who had stood up for both them and many others affected by an oppressive regime in Honduras.

“I knew every time I walked into that prison that if anything happened, there were people out there who would keep fighting for us and that we weren’t alone,” Karen shared with the audience from a small podium at the front of the hall while Edwin stood just behind her with his hand resting on her shoulder.

“That was how your support helped us … it was that backing from everywhere which fueled our fight and gave us strength,” she expressed while specifically thanking her mother Janet Spring for leading efforts through the Simcoe County Honduran Rights Monitor group.

Karen had been at that same Elmvale Community Hall back in April 2018 when she stood before another crowd of 150 feeling overwhelmed as she explained how her partner Edwin Espinal was locked away under dire conditions without due process among dozens of political prisoners suffering similarly in Honduras.

Karen met Edwin while working as a coordinator for the Honduras Solidarity Network starting in 2009 after a military coup removed a democratically elected president.

The military unleashed chaos as it imposed curfews while killing protesters and falsely arresting others who ended up imprisoned without trial.

Born and raised in Tegucigalpa-the capital city-Edwin spent some years living undocumented in the U. S. before returning home to advocate for human rights. He faced arrest and torture back in 2010 but managed to get released; however, his home got raided three years later.

On January 19th of 2018 he was arrested again following an anonymous social media campaign accusing him along with others of links to criminal organizations and drug cartels. During his pre-trial hearing he faced numerous charges including terrorism. He landed inside La Tolva prison where he spent two weeks isolated from everyone else.

Edwin married Karen inside that prison.

He remained confined within La Tolva sharing cramped quarters along with twelve other men receiving only two hours of sunlight each month until August 9th of 2019 when bail was granted by a judge.

A long wait ensued as he waited two more years until finally having his trial where three judges ruled him innocent across all charges laid against him.

The couple waited another six months for formal written confirmation about their victory along with several years dedicated towards clearing Edwin’s name officially before applying for him to move to Canada legally.

After facing denials on three different visa applications eventually approval came through granting him permanent residency allowing him entry into his wife’s hometown on December 5th of 2025. Since then he’s happily been dealing with snow shoveling duties!

“It’s truly inspiring being here,” Edwin addressed those gathered. “It’s such an honor standing before you all here within this community of Elmvale located within Simcoe County; thank you immensely for your support.”

The Elmvale community along with residents from wider Simcoe County-including students from Innisdale high school-sent letters urging action towards Canadian authorities alongside phone calls expressing concern while frequently checking up on Edwin throughout this entire ordeal!

“I’m here today because of everything you’ve done,” he stated prior discussing some dangers he’d encountered dealing directly alongside organized criminals viewing him unfavorably due strictly due solely based upon being an activist advocating strongly regarding human rights matters within prisons like La Tolva condemned previously by Amnesty International over its treatment standards involving inmates held captive therein.”

“I thought I’d never escape such horrors,” said Edwin reflecting solemnly upon past experiences endured whilst relying significantly upon updates coming forth surrounding advocacy work initiated externally among supportive individuals residing nearby.”

“There were moments dreaming about one day meeting face-to-face those extraordinary souls willing enough stand behind me throughout challenges faced!”
