Seventeen men, including two from Surrey, B. C., have been taken into custody by Peel Regional Police and are facing a total of 106 criminal charges related to the ongoing extortion issue affecting the South Asian community in the Peel Region of Southern Ontario.

Authorities suspect that most of those arrested have connections to the international crime group known as For Brothers. They believe this gang operates in Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon, and British Columbia, with links extending to California.

“Overall, the 17 accused are connected to 24 incidents. Of those, investigators linked 16 violent incidents associated with For Brothers, including arson and multiple shootings that involved 324 rounds discharged,” noted a Peel Police press release Monday (May 25).

“In one incident, investigators allege two of the accused were responsible for a shooting and arson at a residential address in Caledon (Ontario), followed minutes later by a second shooting targeting a business in Brampton.”

Surrey’s Ravinder Singh, 25, faces two counts of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence of discharging a firearm. Jashanbir Singh, 21, is charged with assault and extortion. Police did not specify if these two men are linked to For Brothers.

A joint task force operation began in December 2025 involving Peel Regional Police and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with support from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC).

Surrey Police also contributed “intelligence and information sharing,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton.

No charges related to extortion violence have been filed against any of these men in Surrey, according to confirmation from Surrey Police on Tuesday (May 26).

Chief Nishan Duraiappah from Peel Regional Police stated, “These arrests reflect the coordinated efforts of Peel Regional Police and our law enforcement partners across jurisdictions to disrupt these networks and hold those responsible accountable. Extortion is not confined to one region but is connected both nationally and internationally. Addressing it requires strong cross-border collaboration and intelligence-sharing among agencies. We recognize the fear and harm this has caused, particularly within the South Asian community, and remain committed to putting a stop to these crimes and keeping our communities safe.”

Six of those charged might face “immigration action” after their cases proceed through court.

Addtionally, CBSA detained six individuals: three were removed from Canada; two are still held in CBSA custody; while one was released under conditions by the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Erin O’Gorman, president of Canada Border Services Agency remarked: “The Canada Border Services Agency collaborates with law enforcement partners to combat extortion and protect communities across Canada. Our efforts include intelligence sharing, investigations, arrests, detentions , and removal of inadmissible foreign nationals engaging in extortion-related activities. As of May 7 ,2026 , we have opened 446 immigration investigations , issued118 removal orders for various inadmissibility grounds, and enforced55 removals.”
