A house fire on Wednesday evening in Sombra has caused significant damage.
Firefighters from St. Clair Township arrived at a residence on Water Street around 6:35 p. m.
Fire Chief Richard Boyes reported that more than 40 firefighters battled what he called a stubborn blaze.
“I believe it was one of the original houses down there. It was heavy timber construction so the fire worked its way up the walls and got into the roof and it was just very difficult to access,” said Boyes.
He mentioned that the residents who were home at the time managed to escape without injuries.
The damage is estimated to be about $300,000.
“Upon Station 5’s arrival, heavy smoke and flames were showing,” said Boyes. “We started an aggressive interior and exterior attack. It was a very stubborn blaze, we didn’t clear the scene until 12:30 a. m.”
Boyes indicated that they suspect cooking may have caused the fire, but an investigation is still ongoing.
