A diesel fuel leak caused by a trash truck fire in Windsor has been mostly cleaned up, as reported by Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

A representative stated that the ministry was alerted on May 28 after a trash truck caught fire on the westbound E. C. Row Expressway ramp near Walker Road.

Gary Wheeler mentioned that the fire led to an estimated release of around 270 litres of diesel fuel, along with smaller quantities of motor oil and coolant.

He added that the City of Windsor, working together with the owner of the trash truck, took action to contain the spill using booms and diking, and conducted cleanup efforts like vacuuming and skimming affected areas.

“Most material was captured in catch basins prior to entering [the] Grand Marais Drain,” Wheeler wrote in an email to .

“The spill is not expected to cause any lasting environmental impact,” he said.

The ministry noted that booms will be monitored to ensure any remaining residual material is completely captured.
