39 years old

DOB March 6, 1987

With deep sadness, the family shares the unexpected passing of Jacob (Jaakko) Joshua Heikkila on May 27, 2026. While enjoying a walk on a lovely spring day in his cherished Thunder Bay, Ontario, Jacob experienced an unforeseen and serious heart issue.

He is survived by his parents, Hannu and Taina (née Hirsimaki) Heikkila; his sisters, Laura (Javier) and Leena (Matt); and his brother, Lukas. Also remembering him are his uncles, aunts, cousins, and many close friends. Jacob was predeceased by his grandparents, Eino and Siiri Heikkila, and Lauri and Aino Hirsimaki.

Jacob had a particularly special connection with his Siiri-mummu, a relationship that he treasured throughout his life. In many ways, he embodied her same sisukas spirit-strong, determined, and resilient.

A friend to so many, Jacob was truly loved and will be sorely missed. Despite facing challenges in life, the last 18 months were a bright time for him. His excitement for life was evident especially in the kitchen. A bold and inventive cook, he took joy in preparing Karjalan Piirakkas, pulla, and other Finnish treats.

Jacob’s adventurous nature led him to various communities across Ontario; however Thunder Bay and Manitoulin Island remained his favorite places to call home.

To honor Jacob’s memory, instead of flowers donations can be made to any organizations that held special meaning for him:

Saalem Church, Thunder Bay. https://saalem. churchcenter. com/unproxy/giving

Thunder Bay Food Bank, https://www. canadahelps. org/en/dn/64875

The family wishes to sincerely thank community members and emergency responders whose quick actions showed such care and compassion during this difficult time.

A private family gathering will take place this summer.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
