WASAGA BEACH – As Wasaga Beach gets ready for another busy summer, the Town is enhancing protection for the endangered piping plover by hiring two Destination Wasaga Piping Plover Technicians.
These new seasonal positions will help with monitoring and recovery initiatives for the endangered shorebird. This includes conducting beach surveys, monitoring nests, collecting data, and educating residents and visitors.
The technician roles build on existing stewardship efforts aimed at creating a long-term municipal piping plover protection plan for Wasaga Beach. The Town has partnered with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) to put together a detailed Municipal Piping Plover Beach Management Plan. This plan will set clear guidelines for habitat protection, monitoring, public usage, and adaptive management moving forward.
The Town has also started putting up educational signs along critical habitat areas and in designated “no rake” zones. These signs are meant to help residents, visitors, and beachgoers understand the significance of delicate shoreline habitats, adhere to posted protective measures, and aid in the recovery of piping plovers during nesting season.
“Aligned with past Ontario Parks practices, the Town is taking a phased and responsible approach to building its in-house stewardship capacity,” said Lee Furlotte, Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities. “These new technician roles are an important first step, and we expect to continue strengthening this team next season as part of a long-term municipal approach to piping plover protection and beach management. We are grateful to our provincial and federal partners who are working alongside us on the ground, sharing equipment, expertise, and best practices as we build local capacity.”
By maintaining the level of stewardship previously provided by Ontario Parks – while enhancing it through collaboration with federal and provincial partners as well as local volunteers – the Town is reaffirming its commitment to science-based environmental protection along one of Ontario’s busiest freshwater beaches.
The Piping Plover Stewardship Program plays a key role in the Town’s vision for Destination Wasaga where conservation efforts can coexist with tourism and community development.
