It’s been a hectic weekend for the wildland firefighters from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
On Sunday, seven new fires were reported, adding to the five that started on Saturday.
Fires were noted on Sunday, 20 kilometres southwest of Mc Intosh Bay, close to North Spirit Lake First Nation, south of Crooked Pine Lake Road, near Sawmill Lake, south of Sioux Narrows, near Fickas Road, at the southern edge of Wabakimi Provincial Park, along Highway 17, south of Vermilion Bay, and west of Highway 527 on the southeast side of Smiley Lake.
On Saturday, fires erupted near Silcox Lake, located 30 km east of Pikangikum; 30 kilometres southwest of Mac Dowell Lake close to Rossport; south of Aroland; and 25 km east of Cat Lake.
Most fires are relatively small in size.
Two fires in the Red Lake District are currently under observation.
The fire by Mc Intosh Lake has scorched over 700 hectares while the one near Cat Lake covers more than 300 hectares.
The forest fire hazard remains high to extreme throughout northwestern Ontario.
