The Region of Waterloo is set to replace a 63-year-old bridge in Woolwich Township. The Scheifele Bridge, located on Northfield Drive, crosses over the Conestogo River. An environmental assessment was carried out for this project in 2023 to find the best and most affordable options for widening and rebuilding the existing bridge to handle future traffic and improve facilities for pedestrians, buggies, and cyclists.

The selected design features paved shoulders for buggies and cyclists on both sides, along with a sidewalk that has a concrete barrier separating pedestrians from traffic on the east side of the bridge.

Construction is scheduled to start on June 1 at an estimated cost of around $24 million. Regional officials are aiming for completion by 2028.

<p Originally built in 1963, this structure has undergone numerous repairs over the years.

During public consultations, local residents and members of the Mennonite community expressed concerns about traffic flow during construction, managing speed on the bridge-which is frequently used by buggies and cyclists-and protecting nearby wetland areas.
