A woman from Cobourg is heartbroken and frustrated after discovering that her friend was found dead near the Whitby GO Station almost a week following her request for police to check on him.

Rochelle Walker feels that more could have been done after she voiced concerns about her friend Jason’s safety in the days leading up to his body being located in some brush near the Whitby GO Station on May 26, 2026.

“No foul play is suspected,” police stated, but Walker can’t shake the thought that if emergency responders had acted more quickly, her friend might still be alive.

Having known Jason for several years, Walker was listed as the emergency contact for his dog – which she says made everything that happened leading up to his disappearance even more concerning.

The first indication something was wrong came on May 16 when Jason reached out to tell her he might need help looking after his dog for a few days.

“When he first asked, I immediately felt something was off because his dog meant everything to him,” Walker shared.

After she texted back checking on him, Jason stopped responding.

The next day, May 17, Jason contacted her again asking for assistance with the dog. This time he provided the phone number of the superintendent of his apartment building in Whitby so that someone could get into his unit if necessary.

A friend of Walker’s went over to pick up the dog but learned from the superintendent that Jason was still inside with the pet.

When Walker’s friend saw Jason, she noticed he was sweating profusely and looked unwell, yet he chose to keep his dog at that moment.

This news heightened Walker’s worries significantly.

“I knew something wasn’t right because when my friend said he was sweating really bad and was asking us to take his dog – and his dog was his most prized possession – I knew something was wrong.”

By Monday, May 18, Jason got in touch with Walker once again saying he planned on leaving and wanted someone to take care of the dog. He told her to grab its bed, toys, food and mentioned hoping he’d see it again sometime soon.

Around evening time that day, a friend returned to collect the dog from Jason’s apartment.

Reportedly sitting in an unknown vehicle without speaking to anyone else at the time, it fell upon the superintendent of the building to retrieve the pet.

Walker now worried not only about her friend’s mental health but also about how physically well he truly was.

Around 5:30 a. m. the next morning came what would turn out to be Jason’s last message. He texted saying he felt “stranded” and couldn’t find a ride home.

Wanting desperately to help him out herself but unable due to car trouble of her own; instead she kept messaging him about things needed for his dog.

No response came from Jason afterward.
