The US Justice Department has once more requested a federal judge to lift an injunction that is delaying President Donald Trump’s ballroom project, stating that the shooting incident outside the White House on Saturday highlights an urgent need for enhanced security measures.
In a five-page court document filed on Sunday, the Justice Department emphasized that the event illustrates the pressing necessity for “top-level, state-of-the-art security at the White House, including the ballroom,” asserting its significance for national safety. They also urged for the lawsuit contesting the project to be dismissed.
The court document declared: “This is a terrible, tremendously harmful case to the United States of America, and all it stands for!”
US District Judge Richard Leon, appointed by former President George W. Bush and based in Washington, determined in April that Trump did not have legal permission to construct the ballroom without congressional consent. Leon imposed an injunction halting “above-ground construction of the planned ballroom,” but his ruling was swiftly stayed by an appeals court. Construction work has proceeded.
Previously, the DOJ had urged Leon to lift his injunction and dismiss the lawsuit regarding the ballroom following a thwarted attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April. Leon has yet to respond to that appeal.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a congressionally chartered nonprofit organization, initiated this lawsuit. They stated they would not withdraw their case after April’s attack despite requests from the Justice Department.
The gunman who fired at a checkpoint near the White House on Saturday was shot by officers and later died after being taken to a hospital on Saturday evening, according to information from the Secret Service.
