The City of Windsor is putting over $4.8 million into road repair, rebuilding, and replacement projects throughout three wards this year.
These initiatives are part of the city’s 2026 budget, which allocates more than $317 million for capital expenses, with $163.8 million earmarked specifically for roads. The council approved a 0 per cent municipal tax levy increase along with a $2.26-billion capital plan spread over ten years.
This marks the latest in a series of recent announcements.
“I am proud of council’s support for the largest road rehabilitation and repair program in the city’s history,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “In the past two months, we’ve revealed an investment exceeding $36 million to rehabilitate, reconstruct, or replace essential roads that serve as crucial connections.
“Investing wisely means fostering progress, enhancing services strategically, building a stronger community to secure our future, ensuring that Windsor stays one of the most affordable places in Ontario, and making real improvements across our entire city.”
The planned work includes milling and paving as well as complete road reconstructions that will extend the life of these roads by 10 to over 20 years. Most projects will involve some degree of road closure while maintaining local access where feasible.
Ward 5 will receive approximately $1.72 million for work that includes resurfacing and reconstruction on Whelpton Street, Ontario Street, Metcalfe Street, North Service Road East and Vimy Avenue. Several projects are set to kick off in June 2026 with others beginning in the fall.
Ward 6 is slated to get $2.24 million for upgrades which include reconstructing Carling Crescent along with a new watermain installation and resurfacing on St. Paul Avenue, Sumach Crescent and Garden Court Drive. Ontario Street within this ward will also undergo full reconstruction in the fall.
The projects planned for Ward 7 total about $790,000 and include work on Cora Greenwood Drive and Mulberry Court-both set to start milling, paving and reconstruction in 2026-part of the significant Banwell Road corridor improvements project worth over $120.5 million which includes upgrading the E. C. Row Expressway interchange.
The yearly budget also designates $60 million for sewer systems, $29.2 million for community services and $5.4 million for public transit initiatives. The city reports that annual capital investments have risen by 162 per cent since 2016.
“Over $2.24 million is being invested in road reconstruction, repair, and rehabilitation in Ward 6 this year,” stated Ward 6 Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac. “These investments bring more funding opportunities; they enhance mobility while addressing aging infrastructure so we can keep pace with growth across our city.”
In 2027 alone, an allocation of $8.2 million is set aside for roadwork alongside sewer upgrades affecting seven key streets while the impressive Banwell Road Corridor Improvement project totals around $120 million including enhancements at the E. C. Row Expressway Interchange-marking one of Windsor’s largest infrastructure endeavors ever undertaken.
