With heavy hearts, we share the news of Bette Tkachuk’s passing. Bette had a lively spirit and a unique enthusiasm for life that truly distinguished her. Her days were centered around her family and her large circle of friends, with whom she enjoyed golfing, playing tennis, snowshoeing, and of course, skiing.
Bette spent her childhood in a quaint town in the New Jersey countryside and lived there until she met George, the love of her life, on the ski slopes at Mont Tremblant. They complemented each other perfectly, finding joy together whether sailing the Indian Maiden on Lake Ontario or putting together costumes for parties or exploring new places with their beloved dogs. They eagerly embraced new experiences together and welcomed adventures as they came. As parents to Corey (Alison), Jeff (Samantha), and Kris, they actively participated in their community by joining the Kingsway Paddle Tennis Club and forging lasting friendships.
A heartfelt project was restoring a century-old log cabin in Collingwood.
This endeavor was done with help from friends and family who swung hammers, made sandwiches, and sometimes celebrated a productive day with a cold beer or glass of wine. It became their winter retreat where they would faithfully head every Saturday and Sunday to Craigleith Ski Club. Craigleith held special memories for Bette; whether she was coordinating racers, organizing social events or just enjoying skiing down the hill surrounded by loved ones, she was an enthusiastic part of club activities. In later years, her grandchildren-Georgia, Matthew, Andrew, Alexandra, and Mikaela-became her greatest joy. The happiest times were spent with them around the Christmas tree or at the beach or ski hill. The loss is immeasurable; we will cherish her laughter and energy forever. Besides her children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and many friends, Bette is survived by two dear sisters Carol (Bob) and Ellen (Dick), along with step-siblings Joyce (Steve), Kathie and Arthur (predeceased). While this loss is heartbreaking, it feels fitting that she spent her last moments skiing down a favorite run under blue skies with sunshine above-a good friend by her side and so many loved ones close by. We are grateful for the care given to her by Craigleith’s ski patrollers as well as paramedics and staff at Collingwood General & Marine Hospital. A heartfelt thank you also goes out to all our friends who have supported us through this unexpected sorrow by sharing our grief while uplifting our spirits with joyful stories about Bette’s life. A funeral service will take place at 2 p. m. on Thursday March 2nd at Collingwood First Presbyterian Church located at 200 Maple St., followed by a celebration of life at Craigleith Ski Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Collingwood General Marine Hospital or the Georgian Triangle Humane Society.
