Residents of Mississauga and visitors are invited to head downtown soon – along with a few other locations – to experience a beautiful floral display that won’t stick around for long.

Around 80 Japanese cherry blossom trees started blooming and showcasing their stunning colors about a week ago at Kariya Park, the peaceful Japanese-style park named after Mississauga’s sister city in Japan and situated in the City Centre.

City officials mentioned today, “the blooms will not last long, so now is the perfect time to visit.”

Typically, cherry blossoms in Mississauga reach full bloom in early May when the city experiences about a week of warm days around 15 C, according to earlier statements from the city.

The best place to enjoy this vibrant season is within Canada’s seventh-largest city at Kariya Park, which officials describe as a “peaceful, beautiful oasis tucked into the heart of downtown Mississauga.”

“Every spring, Kariya Park bursts into a pink-petaled paradise as its nearly 80 Japanese cherry blossom trees show off their blooms,” city officials said in an online notice late last week. “Gifted from Mississauga’s sister city, Kariya, Japan, these stunning trees come in different varieties and shades. They create a magical pastel canopy that only lasts for up to two weeks.”

People beyond Mississauga are also enjoying one of the surest signs that spring is really here this week – whether they’re in Toronto or elsewhere across southern Ontario.

Sakura Watch is a website that tracks when blossoms appear each year at High Park in Toronto and provides predictions for when those bright pink flowers will bloom.

If temperatures warm up nicely, cherry blossoms can start appearing anywhere from late April in Mississauga and throughout the GTA like they did back in 2024 all the way into mid-May as seen back in 2022.

The beauty of these blossoms doesn’t stick around for long though. Once they bloom fully, they typically stay colorful for just one or two weeks (see video below).

The number of cherry trees at Kariya Park has remained stable over time despite various weather challenges including a harsh ice storm back in 2013.

A spokesperson for the city previously told INsauga. com that “there was relatively minimal damage to the cherry blossoms at the time” despite how severe that storm was.

“Most of the damage involved broken branches that were addressed through remedial pruning following the ice storm. Since 2013, we have removed and replaced any dead or diseased tree as needed through our regular maintenance.”

Cherry blossoms have an esteemed place in Japanese art and culture; many varieties found around the world originate from Japan’s cherry tree (Sakura), noted officials from Mississauga.

Mississauga has been partnered with Kariya since 1981. Besides four types of cherry blossom trees found at Kariya Park, visitors can find beautifully designed flower beds, a pavilion featuring unique Japanese elements along with marshland and pond areas plus several sculptures gifted by Kariya itself according to information provided by city officials.

When you visit this park you’ll be surrounded by lush plant life including rhododendrons, pines, ginkgoes, sweetgums and magnolias. You might even spot various wildlife such as ducks, squirrels and turtles who make Kariya Park their home,” added city representatives.

Apart from Kariya Park itself within Mississauga’s boundaries you can also glimpse some cherry blossoms at places like Mississauga Valley , Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens and St. Lawrence Park too according to local authorities.

If you’re willing to travel outside of Mississauga there are more options available where you can catch blossoming season such as High Park located within Toronto; Centennial Park near Etobicoke on its border with Mississauga; Broadacres park located further down Etobicoke; Spencer Smith park or Royal Botanical Gardens based out Burlington plus even Niagara-on-the-Lake which sits farther away yet still offers charm during blooming period!
