What started on Saturday afternoon with reports of a serious car crash in Port Elgin and a strong police presence south of the town has been connected to a deadly shooting involving police that is now being investigated by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

In a statement shared on Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police mentioned that members of the South Bruce Detachment tried to arrest an individual around 5:50 p. m. on February 21.

This individual was said to have been involved in several incidents earlier that day throughout South Bruce and Huron County.

The announcement stated that officers from the OPP Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit found the individual at a home on the Bruce-Saugeen Townline in Kincardine. During this encounter, police discharged their weapon. The individual was later pronounced dead.

No further information regarding what led up to the shooting has been disclosed.

The public first became aware of police activity at 4:44 p. m. Saturday when OPP West Region announced a complete closure of Bruce-Saugeen Townline between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road due to a heavy police presence and urged drivers to steer clear of the area.

Soon after, Saugeen Shores Police shared the advisory again and included another location – the intersection of Goderich Street and Gustavus Street in Port Elgin – advising motorists to avoid that spot as well. At that moment, police indicated there was no threat to public safety.

By early evening, Saugeen Shores Police confirmed they were addressing a “serious motor vehicle collision” at Goderich and Gustavus, describing it as a joint investigation with the Ontario Provincial Police. No details were provided about injuries, how many vehicles were involved, or if anyone had been arrested.

As of 6:00 p. m., traffic had resumed at the Goderich and Gustavus intersection. By 7:30 p. m., OPP reiterated there was no ongoing danger to public safety. However, Bruce-Saugeen Townline remained closed throughout the night.

Since the Special Investigations Unit has activated its mandate, OPP stated they would not release more information. The SIU is an independent civilian agency tasked with investigating incidents involving police where death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault occur.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been revealed or confirmed by law enforcement.

Owen Sound Current has submitted questions to the SIU and will provide updates as more information comes out.
