Uncertainty Remains for Canada

Ontario’s representative in Washington believes the U. S. Supreme Court’s ruling is a win in some ways, but he urged caution regarding how Trump’s new 10 percent tariff might affect Canadian products.

He also highlighted the significant tariffs already placed on major Canadian sectors.

“We still are facing the major brunt of tariffs that we’ve been struggling with, particularly in Ontario and in the auto sector, steel, aluminum,” David Paterson said during an interview on Network.

“Nothing has changed there.”

Paterson stressed that Canada must continue working towards a trade agreement with the United States within the CUSMA talks. He pointed out that the president is currently leveraging other trade laws to apply tariff pressure on countries globally-not just Canada and Mexico.

“This is an ongoing challenge that we have,” he said. “There’s probably more questions that have come out of today’s decision than there are answers.”
