Collaboration aims to tackle real-world challenges via projects linked to industry while promoting innovative research in next-gen AI-powered mobile wireless networks. U of T and Ericsson Canada will create a talent development strategy that prepares students with the essential skills for today’s tech landscape.

TORONTO, Feb. 18, 2026 /CNW/ — Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and the University of Toronto have unveiled a new multi-year partnership aimed at speeding up innovation and R& D in next-generation AI-powered mobile communication technologies. The agreement was celebrated with a signing ceremony at the University of Toronto today. As part of an initial three-year framework, Ericsson will invest $1M to enhance the technological foundation that supports wireless communications, thereby bolstering Canada’s R& D ecosystem.

“This partnership signifies a strategic investment in Canada’s innovation landscape-promoting top-tier research, cultivating highly skilled talent, and reinforcing the groundwork for secure and reliable next-gen wireless technologies,” said Nishant Grover, President of Ericsson Canada. “As 5G continues to revolutionize industries and societies, we are looking forward to 6G. Together with the University of Toronto, we’re committed to shaping the future of connectivity both in Canada and globally.”

Building on over ten years of successful teamwork, this agreement formalizes a mutual commitment to excellence in mobile communications, advanced computing, and applied AI. U of T was selected by Ericsson following a thorough process that identified a university partner whose strengths align with Ericsson’s focus on innovation, research, and collaboration.

The partnership will devise strategies focused on addressing real-world research challenges through industry-connected projects while promoting research excellence in state-of-the-art mobile communications, mobile computing solutions combined with machine learning capabilities. It also aims to attract talent while developing strategies that equip students with relevant skills needed to thrive in today’s tech sector.
