A 63-year-old man is facing allegations of attempting to kidnap three boys under the age of 14 from a men’s restroom in a park along Whitby’s waterfront on Wednesday.
According to Durham Regional Police, officers were called to Heydenshore Kiwanis Park – located on Water St. near the southern end of Brock St. – after reports emerged of a “suspicious interaction” involving a man and three boys in a public washroom.
The children reportedly encountered a man who asked them to come over to his vehicle, Const. Emily Mitchell stated in a release issued on Saturday.
She mentioned that the kids “reported the incident to their parents” who subsequently reached out to the police.
The suspect left the scene in his vehicle prior to police arrival at the park, but Mitchell indicated that officers found him not far away and took him into custody.
Bernard Deery, a resident of Whitby, is charged with three counts of trying to abduct individuals under fourteen years old and resisting an officer.
He has been held for a bail hearing.
Investigators have shared a photo of the accused due to concerns that there may be other victims.
Police are encouraging anyone who has had contact with this individual to come forward.
