The long-awaited speed cameras in Oakville are finally up and running.

The town has shared that 14 of these cameras are now operational, placed in areas where speeding has been a constant danger, particularly near schools, parks, daycare centres, and senior residences.

These automated speed enforcement (ASE) systems will take pictures of vehicles that exceed the speed limit.

After reviewing the images, a ticket will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle within 30 days of the violation. The ticket goes to the vehicle owner no matter who was driving at the time. A map showing camera locations along with more information about this program can be found here.

“Our speed enforcement cameras are placed only in areas where speeding endangers our most vulnerable community members, especially children,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “These cameras target the few who refuse to slow down and prioritize the safety of our kids and others in our community.”

The ASE cameras will move every four months to different spots within the town’s 36 Community Safety Zones. Ninety days before they change locations, “Coming Soon” signs will be put up at new spots, and updates will be posted on oakville. ca.

Typically, fines can go as high as $588 for those driving nearly 50 km/h over the limit, but most fines tend to fall between $80 and $90 according to provincial data. These tickets won’t show up on your driving record or affect your car insurance.

This program is becoming more popular across Ontario as municipalities work to slow down drivers in places identified as potential risk zones like schools and parks used by seniors-also known as community safety zones.

The aim is to change driver behavior rather than just issuing tickets, which is why camera locations are made public.

This initiative is meant to complement other road safety strategies such as traffic calming measures, community safety zones, speed display boards, educational programs, and police enforcement efforts.

Here are the specific locations:

Colonel Williams Parkway from Stocksbridge Avenue/Richview Boulevard to Watercliffe Court Rebecca Street from Sussex Street to Bronte Road. Old Abbey Lane between Montrose Abbey Drive and Milton Road/Northwood Drive Nottinghill Gate from Runnymead Crescent (easterly intersection) to Beechgrove Crescent Reynolds Street between Cornwall Road and Sumner Avenue. Kingsway Drive from Wynten Way/Winterbourne Drive to Prince John Circle/Sir David Drive Westoak Trails Boulevard from Brookhaven Crescent/Arbourview Drive to Colbeck Street/Amberglen Court Pine Glen Road between Newcastle Crescent (westerly intersection) and Proudfoot Trail Sixth Line from Elm Drive to Upper Middle Road River Glen Boulevard from Towne Boulevard to Mowat Avenue Glenashton Drive from Eighth Line to Grand Boulevard North Ridge Trail between Glenashton Drive and Postridge Drive Sixteen Mile Drive from Preserve Drive to Larry Crescent/Isaac Avenue Post Road from Dundas Street to Threshing Mill Boulevard INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies
