Petrolia is set for a fun-filled long weekend as it gears up for its annual Family Fun Days.

Laurissa Ellsworth, the Director of Marketing, Arts, and Communication, mentioned that most events will be free.

“There are a couple that have a low cost but otherwise, they are sponsored by some great businesses in and around Petrolia,” she said. “It’s pretty amazing to be able to bring families out and have them keep their wallets in their pockets. We really appreciate that, when we can do it.”

The celebrations will begin on Friday with a complimentary showing of Wicked: For Good at Victoria Hall at 7 p. m.

The Victoria Playhouse Petrolia Foundation is also sponsoring movies on Saturday and Sunday. The Tigger Movie will screen at 1 p. m. on Saturday, followed by Karate Kid: Legends at 7 p. m. on Sunday. Kids under 13 should be accompanied by an adult.

The Petrolia YMCA will open its gym from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

For the first time ever, the town has decided to include a Yuk Yuks comedy show featuring comedians Ian Sirota, Fiona O’Brien, and Patrick Haye.

She mentioned that these three comics often share jokes about relationships and parenting.

“We thought for Family Day and Valentine’s Day, it might be a perfect fit,” she said.

Tickets for the Saturday night performance at Victoria Hall are $20 (plus tax). As of Thursday, tickets were still available through the Victoria Hall Box Office.

This Sunday, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 216 will host its monthly family fundraising breakfast from 9 a. m. until 11:30 a. m. The cost is $13 for adults, $6 for kids aged six to ten, while children under six can eat free.

Free public skating sessions will take place at Greenwood Recreation Centre from 1:50 p. m. to 2:50 p. m. on Sunday and from 11 a. m. to 12:30 p. m., as well as between 1 p. m. and 2:50 p. m., on Monday.

Also on Monday morning, New Life Assembly Church at 421 Oozloffsky St., will host a free Family Day breakfast from 8 a. m. until 10 a. m., along with a screening of Dog Man at 8:30 a. m.

The Petrolia YMCA will provide free access to facilities from 7 a. m. until 4 p. m., along with five free swims scheduled between 10 a. m. and 2:45 p. m. Families are encouraged to call ahead to book their spots at (519) 882-2232.

The Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club plans to set up bouncy castles and games in the YMCA gymnasium from 10 a. m. until 3 p. m., alongside an affordable family BBQ available from10 a. m. to1 . p. m.</

The Petrolia Lions Hall will have free family bingo running from 1 . p. m. to3 . p. m.</

This winter has turned out favorable for this year’s snow sculpture contest.
“Fortunately we’ve actually had snow for this year,” said Ellsworth.
</

The contest started back in January and runs until February16at4 . p m.</

This year’s theme is Winter Olympics.
While snow must be the main material used , participants can add paint or props into their sculptures.
Ellsworth noted they’ve received many submissions so far.
“Some of them so far have been pretty crafty. It’s pretty amazing what you can do when you give people such broad subject matter , plus actual snow they can use.”</</</</</. ><
<The prizes are being sponsored by the Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club.. Submissions including photos of sculptures can be sent via email totwagner@petrolia. ca before the Family Day deadline.
