If you’re planning on doing some ice fishing this Family Day weekend, you won’t need to buy a fishing licence or an Outdoors Card.

Residents of Ontario can fish for free.

This is the first of four free fishing weekends set for this year.

The idea is to encourage folks to get outside and try their hand at fishing, maybe even for the first time.

“Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario,” states Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources, in a release.

“Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time ice fishing, take advantage of this opportunity to get out and make lasting memories with friends and family.”

Anglers still need to follow all conservation fishing licence catch and possession limits, along with all other relevant fishing regulations.

The Ministry also wants everyone to keep safety as the top priority when heading out onto frozen lakes.

Check conditions with local ice hut operators or fellow anglers, and let someone know where you’ll be going.

Make sure to wear suitable gear and clothing according to the weather conditions for safety reasons.

This free fishing weekend starts Saturday and runs through Monday.

You can also look forward to more free fishing weekends during Mother’s Day weekend (May 9 to 10), Father’s Day weekend (June 20 to 21), and Family Fishing week (June 27 to July 5).

Outside these free periods, most individuals between the ages of 18 and 64 are required to have an Outdoors Card and a licence in order to fish.
