On Friday, April 4, 2025, at the age of 97, Giovanni Mele passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 28, 1927, he was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He will be reunited forever with his beloved wife Caterina of 66 years. He was a wonderful father to Louie G. Mele (Antonietta), Angela Kaschalk (Tom) and Ross Mele (Florence). He took great pride in being a nonno to Gian (Kat), Laura, Michael (Natalia), Stephanie (Joshua) and Patrick (Ellie).
Giovanni was born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Cosenza, Italy. He was one of six children born to the late Luigi and Angela Mele. His siblings include the late Maria and Salvatore Bonassa, the late Saverio Mele survived by his wife Lina, the late Isabel and Frank Sciarotta, the late Giuseppe Mele survived by his wife Rosa and the late Albina Pignanelli survived by her husband Antonio. He was also a cherished son-in-law to the late Rosario and Giuseppina Mancina and brother-in-law to Barbara Astorino and the late Luigi. Many loving nieces and nephews across Windsor, the United States and Italy knew him as “Uncle Johnny.”
Giovanni showed kindness, strength and endless love for his family. He served as an inspiring role model who always remained positive and encouraging. We were lucky to have such an amazing example of a husband, father, grandfather and man. He spent 37 years working at the Windsor Salt Mine and was proud to be part of the Caboto Club.
The Mele family wishes to thank all of their neighbors who visited him regularly and looked out for him. A special thanks goes out to the caring staff at HDGH Emara Palliative; from day one when you called him “Gio,” he felt special thanks to your love and respect.
Visitation will take place at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home – Central Chapel (1700 Tecumseh Rd. E., 519-253-7234) on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 2-5pm and again from 7-9pm. The Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Angela Merici Church (980 Louis Ave.) on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 10am. Entombment will follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery. Donations in memory can be made to Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare – Palliative Care. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www. windsorchapel. com
