And now, at age 60, this longtime criminal is free again, prompting Waterloo Regional Police Service to issue a warning: Koehler is dangerous and currently residing in Kitchener.
Koehler was released after completing two-thirds of his most recent sentence. His release was briefly taken back in September due to “deteriorating behaviours.” The parole board noted he had been seen at an LCBO store, which is off-limits for him.
HIGH-SPEED CRASH
Back on August 3rd ,1985 , Koehler caused a tragic high-speed crash that resulted in three deaths – two teenage girls as well as police officer Constable Craig Campbell who was only twenty-four years old. At this time he had been drinking before getting behind wheel while transporting Helen Wattam , seventeen (a mother-to-be), along with Christine Lindsay (sixteen) home after wedding rehearsal dinner.
Officers clocked him speeding near Walkerton going as fast as160 km/h leading them onto chase until finally crashing into OPP cruiser killing both young women alongside rookie officer Campbell. Four more people were injured during incident.
Although Koehler’s blood alcohol level slightly exceeded legal limit authorities concluded alcohol didn’t play major role regarding accident.

POSES ‘SIGNIFICANT RISK’
“Koehler has an extensive criminal history of violent offence convictions, including criminal negligence causing death, assault with a weapon, assault, and assault police,” said a news release. “WRPS’ Offender Management Unit believes Mr. Koehler poses a significant risk to public safety and a high risk of reoffending or breaching his terms.” Koehler’s most recent time behind bars included a twelve-year manslaughter sentence for choking his vulnerable roommate Mary Anne May, who was 55 years old when she died in their Kitchener apartment back in 2013. She had moved in with him due to financial difficulties while receiving disability benefits and working as a cleaner.

The Waterloo Record reported that May had ongoing issues with Koehler before things turned deadly on September 18th, 2013. He broke into her room and violently assaulted her until she died by choking. “F*** I can’t believe it,” he reportedly told someone living nearby. “I f***ing killed her.” PAfterwards, Koehler wrapped her body up in a tarp before placing it into a bicycle trailer. That night he cycled away to leave her remains near Grand River where they were discovered later on. Koehler initially faced charges for second-degree murder but took a plea deal for manslaughter since there wasn’t clear intent to kill involved. He later claimed he simply wanted “to scare her.”A few years later while at his halfway house staff members mentioned how Koehler spoke about May disrespectfully. He even reenacted how he choked her by putting his hand around his own neck during discussions about past events just like that night. Later that same evening he got into an altercation with another resident after reportedly making advances towards their female friend.

‘PATTERN OF VIOLENCE’
In year twenty-twenty-one Parole Board Canada voiced concerns over lack optimism surrounding Koehlers case despite almost forty past convictions.

“You have established pattern violence high-risk behavior while lacking insight into why act they do; minimizing substance abuse issues previous conditional releases,” Board pointed out report adding : “Last fall wrote letter containing veiled threat suggesting potential continue remain high.” They added evidence showed history slapping punching head-butting etc., some incidents using knife stabbing victim hand threatening harm others intimate partners family members included children too.”
Please note findings indicated exceptional risks future acts violence context spousal matters stemming longstanding problems managing emotions impulsivity lifestyle instability negative associations related interactions social settings also raised alarms concerning associates involved decisions made based friendships formed over time resulting complications thereafter.”bhunter@postmedia. com
