Families who love fishing can take advantage of a free opportunity this weekend.

From Saturday to Monday, Ontario will celebrate its first free fishing weekend of 2026. Anglers can fish without needing to purchase a licence or Outdoors Card beforehand.

“Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario,” said Mike Harris, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources. “Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time ice fishing, take advantage of this opportunity to get out and make lasting memories with friends and family.”

Those planning to head out on the ice are strongly encouraged to prioritize safety. Be sure to check conditions with local hut operators and fellow anglers before venturing out. Clear blue ice is usually the strongest, while white or honeycombed ice is much weaker. It’s wise to inform someone about your plans and when you expect to return, as well as dress warmly for comfort and safety.

Catch and possession limits still apply, along with restrictions in sanctuaries and conservation areas as outlined by provincial fishing regulations.

If you’re participating in the free fishing weekend, make sure you carry a government-issued ID that has your name and date of birth.

Ontario will also have free fishing weekends during Mother’s Day weekend in May, Father’s Day weekend in June, and Family Fishing Week from June 27 to July 5.
