Michael Joseph Gibney – October 5, 1934 – May 13, 2014

Michael Gibney, age 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at General Marine Hospital in Collingwood. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was the youngest of nine children in a lively household. A skilled carpenter, he relocated to Toronto in 1958. That same year, he married Margaret (Marie) Flaherty and together they raised four children: Lorraine (Martin) Zapfe, Mike (Sharon), Rory (Victoria), and Glenn (Alison). He took great pride in his eight wonderful grandchildren-Haley (Wes), Rachel (Colin), Kevin, Michelle, Ryan, Emmett, Alanna, James-and his great-grandson Jax! Mickey had a knack for telling jokes and sharing stories; his grandchildren fondly remember him saying things like “You’ve got a great face for radio” and their favorite “You’re a good, kind kid”… just ask any of them and they’ll be happy to finish the saying! Mike moved to Collingwood fifteen years ago where he enjoyed life by the water and made many good friends and neighbors. He loved dogs too and always kept a box of treats handy for the neighborhood pups who came around during their walks. Mike will truly be missed by family members, friends, caring neighbors, and the local dogs! The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at the hospital for their compassionate care as well as Mike’s wonderful neighbors. A special thanks goes out to Carsta for all her help with Mike over the last few years. Friends are invited to join us at Fawcett Funeral Home – Collingwood Chapel on Monday May 19th at 10:00 a. m., followed by a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church starting at 11:00 a. m. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Mike to the Collingwood General Marine Hospital Foundation.
