York Regional Police report that a father of four confronted three intruders during a home invasion in Vaughan, Ont., over the weekend and was fatally shot while his family was present.

According to police, on Aug. 31, just before 1 a. m., the suspects – one armed with a gun – broke into the house through the back door.

Insp. Paolo Fiore informed reporters on Wednesday that Abdul Aleem Farooqi, 46, encountered the intruders when he was shot and killed.

Fiore mentioned that the suspects escaped through the back of the house, taking three mobile phones belonging to family members; two of these were later found discarded nearby and collected by police.

“At this time, it is believed the house was specifically targeted for a robbery,” Fiore stated. “We are still investigating all potential motives behind this robbery, but right now we think it’s purely for monetary gain.”

Fiore also confirmed that Farooqi was shot in front of his family but did not provide details about their locations or how close they were during the incident.

Farooqi had four children aged between four and 17 years old. He lived at home with his wife.

“Witness statements from family members corroborated the sequence of events and confirmed the suspect’s actions inside the home,” he said.

“Mr. Farooqi was not involved in any criminal activities,” Fiore emphasized.

“From what I’ve heard from community members, Mr. Farooqi was well-respected, an excellent family man, and loved by those around him. He owned Unique Furnace and Duct Cleaning in Mississauga and was a devoted Muslim Canadian.”

The suspects fled in a dark-colored SUV, according to police. The first suspect is described as male, approximately six feet tall with broad shoulders, wearing dark clothing and a mask. The second suspect is identified as male, about 5’9″ tall and dressed similarly in dark clothing and a mask. The third male suspect has a thin build and wore dark clothes along with a mask.

Around 90 minutes later, another home invasion occurred roughly one kilometer away in another neighborhood involving three armed intruders. Police noted that while these two incidents haven’t been officially connected yet, investigators are looking into possible links between them.

The York Regional Police indicated an increase in home invasions lately while carjackings have decreased.

The police chief responded to comments made by Ontario Premier Ford who labeled the suspects as “scumbags” this week.

“They’re suspects; they’re people,” said Police Chief Jim Mac Sween. “We don’t know who they are yet but at the end of the day I am not going to comment on what any government official might say.”

“From my perspective ‘cowards’ comes to mind-people who don’t care or show compassion,” Mac Sween continued. “That’s how I see individuals like this; they’re not helping create safe communities.”

The chief reiterated calls for bail reform due to instances where repeat offenders commit more crimes after cutting off ankle monitors or fleeing law enforcement.
