With heavy snowfall and colder temperatures, snowmobilers are back enjoying Ontario’s trails after several years of challenging conditions.
From February 9 to February 16, riders will notice more police presence on the trails as part of Motorized Snowmobile Week.
This week-long initiative is a collaboration between the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The focus of Motorized Snowmobile Week is to address unsafe riding practices that can result in accidents, injuries, or damage to property.
According to law enforcement, these risky behaviors include speeding, losing control, riding under the influence of alcohol, and distracted riding.
To ensure a safe ride, police recommend:
• Wearing a helmet and other safety gear
• Avoiding alcohol or drugs while riding
• Sticking to designated trails
• Checking trail conditions on the OFSC website
• Reviewing the weather forecast
• Informing someone about your riding plans
“Taking a few extra steps helps ensure everyone gets home safely and can keep enjoying everything Ontario’s winter has to offer,” reminds Inspector Mike Mc Connell, OPP West Region Traffic and Marine Manager.
No incidents have occurred in Chatham-Kent so far, but there have been three fatal snowmobile collisions already this year.
During the entire 2024-2025 riding season, five riders lost their lives in fatal motorized snow vehicle collisions.
