Ontario Provincial Police report that a 78-year-old man has lost his life after being hit by a tree while cleaning up after an ice storm near Peterborough.
Officers responded to a residence in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township on Monday following reports that someone had been struck by a tree, according to an OPP news release issued on Tuesday.
The OPP stated that a witness claimed the homeowner had requested assistance in removing trees that were damaged due to the ice storm.
“The two were both experienced in tree removal and had already felled four or five trees before the last one came down striking the one individual,” the OPP said in a news release.
The man was declared dead at the scene.
On March 30, Ontario experienced a significant ice storm that caused power outages for over a million homes and businesses.
In an update on Tuesday, Hydro One reported that around 32,000 customers are still without power.
Crews have restored power to more than 97 percent of customers and continue working on repairs for lines serving fewer customers, according to the utility.
Hydro One noted that restoration efforts may be slower on Tuesday in areas facing high winds, heavy snow, or flooding, such as Bracebridge, Penetang, Minden, and Fenelon Falls.
With clear weather expected on Wednesday, crews will be able to get their boats back in the water to assist with restoration efforts.
Fenelon Falls currently has the highest number of customers affected without power, with about 11,102 households impacted.
