Update: A 32-year-old man from St. Catharines has lost his life in the multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday morning, police said in an update on X.

Authorities now report that six vehicles were involved in the accident that took place on Highway 406 near St. Catharines at 6:45 a. m. on Wednesday.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Rob Tihor stated that a vehicle traveling in the southbound lanes of the highway crossed over into the northbound lanes for reasons still unclear. Tihor confirmed that it was the driver of this vehicle who died.

The people in the five other vehicles sustained minor injuries, he mentioned.

The northbound and southbound lanes of the highway are expected to remain closed until mid-afternoon.

A serious multi-vehicle accident has resulted in a highway closure near St. Catharines on Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the scene in the northbound lanes of Highway 406 close to St. David’s Road in Thorold, as reported by the Ontario Provincial Police on X around 7:20 a. m.

One individual suffered critical injuries due to the collision, according to OPP reports.

The police indicated that all northbound lanes are fully blocked from Beaverdams Road to St. David’s Road.

The OPP advises drivers to seek alternate routes and be prepared for an extended closure period.
