A 17-year-old cyclist has been charged following a collision with a vehicle while riding against traffic in a bike lane in Vaughan, Ont., according to police.

The incident took place around 3 p. m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Beverley Glen Boulevard and Dufferin Street, as reported by York police in a news release.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a white vehicle positioned in the right-turn lane of Dufferin Street on the northbound side, along with a damaged bicycle nearby.

Authorities stated that the cyclist was receiving treatment from paramedics for minor injuries. The driver of the car did not suffer any injuries.

Investigators discovered that the teen had been cycling southward in a northbound bike lane and was not wearing a helmet. In Ontario, cyclists under 18 are legally required to wear helmets.

The 17-year-old has now been charged with careless driving and riding without a helmet, as per police reports.

In their statement, police reminded everyone on the road that cyclists must follow the same rules and responsibilities as drivers under the Highway Traffic Act. They encouraged cyclists to:

Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey traffic signals and signs. Always wear a helmet if you are under the age of 18. Helmets are strongly recommended for cyclists of all ages. Have a working bell on your bicycle, and use lights and reflectors at night Stay visible and predictable to other people on the road
