“I have fought the good fight”
In loving memory of Wendell Thomas Irvine who passed away peacefully at the Maison Mc Cullough Hospice with his wife Elizabeth by his side.
Loving husband of Elizabeth Franchetto Irvine from Lively, and devoted cat dad to Callie, Bepino and Swirl. Wendell is survived by his sister Joan Bonhomme (Rick) of Sudbury, his sister-in-law Jane Rodrigues (late Brian) of Coniston, and brother-in-law Raymond Franchetto (Arlene) of Dundas.
He is also survived by his nieces and nephew whom he loved dearly and was immensely proud of. Matthew Rodrigues (Melissa) and Sara Rodrigues (Peter), Marin Mills (Steve) and Grace Neeley (Eric); Stephanie Bonhomme and Rebecca Bonhomme, Jeff Black (Terry) and Jason Black, Melanie Seguin. He also leaves behind many adorable great nieces and nephews. RH. Pre-deceased by his parents Margaret and Ivan Irvine, brothers Edwin and Glen, sisters Donna and Dale, along with nephew Stanley.
Born in New Brunswick, Wendell moved to Sudbury in 1970 where he started a 31-year career with Inco Metals Company. After retiring, he enjoyed walks with his dogs while taking care of his home. He then began a second career as a security guard followed by a rewarding volunteer role with the Canadian Red Cross as a driver which he truly enjoyed. A small gesture made a huge difference for many clients he served. Sadly, health issues brought an end to his volunteering but he kept in touch with some favorite long-time clients. He also had several successful years as an active member of the Coniston Lions Club.
Wendell was very fit and led an active lifestyle. Gym workouts were part of his daily routine even during health struggles; he continued exercising to maintain strength as much as possible. Walking, running, and cycling were activities that challenged him personally for improvement.
Wendell met Elizabeth (whom he affectionately called Liza) at a local gym in 1983. This sparked a long courtship culminating in their wedding on February 6, 1993-a chilly -40 degrees that day at 4 pm-proving that sometimes even confirmed bachelors can change their minds! Wendell and Elizabeth would have celebrated their 33rd anniversary on February 6, 2026.
In recent years, Wendell was able to stay at home thanks to the support from various agencies providing care assistance. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ontario Health at Home, Bayshore Services, Community Paramedics, Sudbury Paramedics, Maison Mc Cullough Hospice along with Brown’s Moving and Lifting Services.
Most importantly though are the friends, neighbors, and family whose support made these last years more comfortable for Wendell than they could have been otherwise. Their help with errands or food provisions not only assisted Wendell but was invaluable for Elizabeth’s well-being too.
Wendell will be missed deeply; he’ll forever remain in our hearts through cherished memories filled with experiences that brought smiles-and sometimes head shakes-to many within this loving community.
