SIU Probes Second Incident
Hours later, another crash occurred nearby involving a passenger vehicle and a police cruiser. OPP indicated that two officers were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. In an additional update, Durham regional police mentioned both officers are βin good spirits and will make a full recovery.β The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has initiated an inquiry into this second incident and provided further details in a separate news release on Sunday afternoon. According to SIU reports, Durham police were assisting OPP by managing traffic as they investigated the first fatal collision. A cruiser was stationed in the inside left lane while an Ontario Ministry of Transportation support vehicle was adjacent to it in the center lane; behind them were road barricades set up to redirect traffic off the highway onto Brock Road. Around 4:30 a. m., an eastbound vehicle reportedly drove through these barricades and crashed into the back of the police cruiser. Besides injuring two officers, a 52-year-old man driving that vehicle was also hospitalized with serious injuries, according to SIU statements. The agency has assigned two investigators along with two forensic experts to look into this case.
