The origins of Thanksgiving date back to the Indigenous Peoples who celebrated the harvest and the richness of the land.

As Europeans settled in, they introduced their own harvest customs, which gradually mixed with Indigenous traditions.

One of the first recorded Thanksgivings took place in 1578 when explorer Martin Frobisher held a celebration in what is now Nunavut to give thanks for safely returning from his unsuccessful quest for the Northwest Passage.

Canada officially recognized Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1879, although it was observed on different dates until 1957 when it was established as the second Monday in October.

Here’s what you can expect to be open and closed this Thanksgiving on Monday, Oct. 13, in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills.

Have an awesome weekend!
