The journey to Beijing and Los Angeles will pass through London, Ontario.
Athletics Canada revealed today that the Forest City will be the site for the 2027 Canadian Track & Field Trials and the 2028 Bell Track & Field Trials after a successful proposal from Tourism London, in collaboration with the London Western Track and Field Club, Western University, and the City of London.
The 2027 Canadian Track & Field Championships are scheduled for August 9 to 15 and will act as the selection trials for Canada’s team for the World Athletics Championships in Beijing taking place that September.
In 2028, the Bell Track & Field Trials will take place from June 14 to 18 and will play a key role in selecting athletes representing Canada in Track & Field at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“London has shown itself to be an excellent host for sports events. The city has a rich history in Track & Field, and our partners here have done a fantastic job hosting events like the Canadian Cross Country Championships and the Bob Vigars Classic – part of our National Track & Field Tour,” said Athletics Canada CEO Mathieu Gentès. “Given its role as host for our national outdoor championships, London is perfectly positioned to showcase our athletes on their path to World Championships as well as Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
“I’m excited to welcome both the 2027 Canadian Track & Field Championships and the 2028 Bell Track & Field Trials to London,” said Mayor Josh Morgan. “These prestigious events bring together Canada’s best athletes-and world-class talent-to our city. For the 2028 event, it’ll be even more significant since these championships will also serve as Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic Trials while selecting our team for Los Angeles 2028. Londoners take pride in sporting excellence-from our Memorial Cup champion London Knights to Olympic champions Damian Warner and Alysha Newman, along with our own Western Mustangs who will assist in hosting these events at Alumni Field. Hosting these Championships highlights London’s love for sports and strengthens its reputation as an elite training ground for athletes across Canada.”
London’s Hometown Heroes
Western Alumni Stadium will provide an impressive backdrop for both the 2027 and 2028 Canadian Track & Field Championships, marking another chapter in London’s long athletic history.
“It’s a tremendous privilege to host both the 2027 Canadian Track & Field Championships and the 2028 Bell Track & Field Trials at Western University’s renowned Western Mustangs facilities,” said Christine Stapleton, Director of Sports & Recreation at Western University. “From Olympic champion Damian Warner’s training base to our U SPORTS national title-winning teams, we have a deep-rooted legacy in athletics-and we’re thrilled to welcome Canada’s top competitors as they pursue their Olympic dreams right here in London.”
Among many outstanding athletes from London who have represented Canada internationally are Olympic champion Damian Warner, bronze medallist Alysha Newman, Pan American Games winner Jessica Zelinka, and Parapan American Games champion Kevin Strybosch.
“Having top athletes compete right here is always exciting-especially during Olympic Trials when dreams are on the line,” remarked Scott Mac Donald, Manager of London Western TFC Club. “We take pride in organizing meets that prioritize both athletes’ needs and coaches’ perspectives. Competing at this level brings enough pressure without adding extra stress from complex logistics. We strive hard to minimize obstacles so that athletes can concentrate on performing well on track or field while creating an energetic environment that inspires high-level performances.”
The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) held its track championships at Western Alumni Stadium last June while various Ontario Summer Games track events energized fans there back in years like 2004, 2018, and again recently.
Away from competition but equally important for Athletics enthusiasts: London hosted last fall’s Canadian Cross Country Championships which returns again this November on November 29-30 at Fanshawe Golf Course.
Known for its dedicated group of knowledgeable track experts alongside enthusiastic volunteers, London is set up beautifully to hold Canada’s biggest annual track meet.
