A company associated with the New York Islanders NHL team has applied for three hockey trademarks in Hamilton as they prepare for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate to relocate to the city.

The Canadian Trademarks Database shows that Islanders Holding LLC filed applications for the trademarks Hamilton Havoc, Hamilton Mustangs, and Hamilton Hammers on April 17. These applications categorize the trademarks under “entertainment in the nature of hockey games,” which has sparked speculation among fans about potential team names.

CBC Hamilton reached out to the New York Islanders regarding whether these trademark applications are related to possible names but did not receive a response before publication.

The applications were submitted by Aird & Berlis, a business law firm based in Toronto.

In late March, the AHL board of governors unanimously approved relocating the Bridgeport Islanders from Bridgeport, Conn., where they have played since 2001, to Hamilton.

Each application was signed by Jay Itzkowitz, who is listed as part of the business operations team for the Islanders. The address provided for Islanders Holding LLC matches that of the Islanders’ business offices located in Floral Park, N. Y.

Each application includes an agreement dated April 20 to transfer ownership of each trademark to Hamilton Hockey Holdings ULC, signed by Zachary Klein, who serves as general counsel for the Islanders. The documents indicate that Hamilton Hockey Holdings ULC is also based at the same office in Floral Park.

The Islanders did not clarify when asked about the connection between these companies.

Team schedule coming this summer

“To our fans and Bridgeport-thank you for 25 incredible years,” an April 23 post on the Bridgeport Islanders Instagram says. “You gave us memories we’ll carry forever. While our next chapter begins elsewhere, a part of us will always belong here.”

This fall, the AHL team is set to play at TD Coliseum in Hamilton, which has recently undergone renovations. The venue previously announced that a new name and logo will be revealed soon but hasn’t specified when that will happen.

According to its website, details about this season’s schedule will be released during summer. The arena is currently accepting deposits for private suites and “premium” seating while advertising season tickets.

The last time an AHL team was based in Hamilton was back in 2015 when the Montreal Canadiens’ farm team was known as the Hamilton Bulldogs. New York Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche played with those Bulldogs during the 2009/10 season.

The Ontario Hockey League team also called Bulldogs played in Hamilton from 2015 until 2023 before moving to Brantford after renovations began at their arena.
