(CNN) – On Tuesday, the House approved a significant spending bill that will bring an end to the partial government shutdown – but it sets up another funding deadline for the Department of Homeland Security in just two weeks.
President Donald Trump is likely to sign the funding bill promptly, which will conclude the shutdown after three days. Trump and GOP leaders urged their party members to support the deal despite some private concerns about it, aiming to prevent a prolonged shutdown like the one that disrupted Washington for 43 days last fall.
The vote marked a hard-earned win for both Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who had to persuade the divided GOP conference to back a plan that only temporarily funds DHS and leaves out some conservative goals.
