An email update from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed that a deceased individual was recovered from the water on Thursday morning, Apr. 23, 2026. The incident took place on Tuesday night, Apr. 21, 2026, when the vehicle hit a ditch while being chased by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), who were trying to pull it over. This occurred near County Road 21 along Highway 33 in Greater Napanee, close to the Lennox and Napanee generating stations. Highway 33 also known as Bath Road and Loyalist Parkway runs between the Village of Bath in Loyalist Township and Napanee.
Multiple investigators and emergency responders including dive teams were present at the location throughout Wednesday, Apr. 22, 2026. It’s unclear when exactly they found and retrieved the body but SIU stated that it happened “over night” by an OPP dive team.
“Last night OPP divers located a deceased person inside the submerged vehicle,” reported their provincial police watchdog.
“The individual has not yet been formally identified.”
The SIU hasn’t shared any more details but mentioned that their investigation is still ongoing. Kingstonist has asked whether investigators think there were any other people inside when the vehicle entered the water.
Responding to inquiries Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for SIU stated authorities suspect there was only one person in that submerged vehicle-the individual retrieved by dive teams overnight.
“It is not believed that there were additional occupants,” Denette noted.
