Canada’s weather agency is urging residents to secure loose items as strong winds sweep through Waterloo Region.
A special weather statement released for Wednesday highlights that wind gusts may reach up to 80 km/h this evening. It’s a good time to switch to winter tires and grab those mittens, as the first hints of winter flurries could be on their way.
The gusty conditions are set to bring in chilly temperatures, with 570’s Weather Specialist Denise Andreacchi mentioning that the upcoming weekend might mark the region’s first real taste of winter.
“Really, through this weekend and the beginning of next week, we definitely have a cooler weather pattern around the corner,” she stated. “We are going to watch for some flurries through the weekend. This is going to be a really southern Ontario in general has the chance, and it’s a slight risk for Kitchener and Waterloo Region.”
Diving into details, Andreacchi noted that these winter flurries could accumulate over the weekend, making Monday potentially the coldest and snowiest day so far.
“Late Friday night, a bit of mixed precipitation, Saturday night as well,” Andreacchi said. “Then we could see some mixing Sunday morning, followed by just straight flurries on Monday.”
As for temperatures, Andreacchi indicated it will feel quite brisk along with those chances of winter flurries, with lows dipping into negative territory averaging around -2 C. For Monday, consistent with possible snowy conditions, she said it will be particularly cold with a high only reaching -1 C.

City News Meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai suggested we might be looking at more of a green Christmas rather than one blanketed in snow. She pointed out how climate change is influencing local weather patterns this holiday season.
Overall, it may be wise to start getting ready for winter across Waterloo Region since those colder days are likely becoming more frequent as 2025 approaches.
The official start of Winter is still about a month and a half away on December 21st.
