It is with great sadness that we share the news of Mona Gertrude Thompson’s passing, which occurred peacefully at home in the embrace of her daughter on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Mona was born in Cabano, Quebec, on April 5, 1947. She grew up in Timmins and later moved to Manitouwadge with her six siblings. It was there that she met and married Bill Thompson. They first relocated to Geraldton before settling in Cameron Falls, Ontario within the Ontario Hydro Colony in 1966. When the colony closed down in 1970, they purchased a home in Nipigon on six lovely acres right in town. In 1980, the township expropriated their land and gave them one year to move out, prompting yet another relocation-this time to 37 acres on Cameron Falls Road. Mom’s resilience shone through during this time; it was simply part of who she was. With a constant smile on her face, she helped us start over for a third time. This particular move had its challenges since Dad was busy building their new house while Mom surprised everyone by being pregnant again. Balancing two teenage daughters and preparing for a newborn didn’t faze her; she managed everything with grace and calmness.
Mom was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and leaves behind a significant gap in our lives. Her love for us girls knew no bounds; we could share anything with her as she wanted to be involved in all aspects of our lives. She radiated kindness and warmth. During family gatherings, she’d often just sit back and watch us girls talk-she cherished those moments spent together. Selfless by nature, she took care of everything at home so Dad could enjoy his hobbies like music or hunting without worry. Mom believed wholeheartedly in us girls and always went out of her way to help us believe in ourselves too. Whenever we struggled with confidence, she found ways to uplift us-guiding not just our paths but also helping us find our inner strength.
She eagerly accepted every challenge my dad presented-from raising chickens and turkeys to riding motorbikes or snowmobiling; even getting her hunting license so she could join us out hunting! A talented seamstress as well, Mom made all our clothes when we were little ones. She loved teaching us how to knit or garden as well as how to make preserves and can food items from the harvests each year. Cooking brought her joy too-she loved entertaining guests! Hummingbirds held a special place in her heart; she fed them for over fifty years.
For seven years now, Mom faced Vascular Dementia but remarkably never lost recognition of who we were-she remembered our names right until the end and expressed love daily up until her final moments with us. Despite everything that changed during those years, she remained cheerful-a source of humor these last five years more than ever before! Living alongside her daughters brought such happiness into her life as she truly became the heart of our family unit once again after many challenges together over time-the lessons continued throughout this past year reminding us about courage unlike any we’ve known before along with patience greater than expected-and taught acceptance toward things beyond understanding while encouraging deeper love filled with compassion combined effortlessly alongside self-sacrifice exhibited daily through experiences shared together caring for one another amid struggles faced throughout life including those hardest times filled only by moments spent supporting each other during trying days ahead!
Mom’s greatest priority always remained loving and caring deeply for family while serving God above all else-not much else mattered according to what mattered most within Him either! At seventeen years old discovering God’s name (Jehovah), excitement led onward without hesitation afterward faithfully serving Him diligently across sixty remarkable years dedicated purely toward studying biblical teachings while spreading His word everywhere possible beginning from September 1964 when baptized officially into faith!
Mona is survived by three daughters: Judy (Eddie) Thompson; Linda (Rik) Aikman; Jill (Troy) Thompson along with grandchildren Michael Ste. Croix & Jennifer Denis plus great-grandchildren Selena Thompson & Nikita Denis-all left behind among siblings Yvette Boys; Pauline Morin (Jack); Paul Legouffe (Patricia)-and numerous nieces & nephews added too!
Predeceased are loving husband Bill Thompson alongside parents Emile & Estelle Legouffe plus brother Guy Legouffe; sisters Stella Grimes & Reggie Daigle-and nephew Jean-Guy Legouffe whom surely missed forevermore..
A heartfelt thanks goes out towards my husband Rik-as well as Judy’s partner Eddie-for supporting both myself plus allowing me ample opportunity caring entirely for Mom at home-it wouldn’t have been achievable without your aid here either truly appreciated infinitely! Special gratitude extends also towards granddaughter Jennifer who played an enormous role consistently showing up regularly traveling back forth helping whenever possible lending support tirelessly throughout this journey taken alongside one another especially needing extra attention given day after day… And finally-a warm acknowledgment issued directly toward Dr. Varty whose commitment exceeds ordinary doctor duties altogether via prompt responses even off hours away ensuring comfort endlessly supplied providing reassurance felt deeply appreciated across entire family concerned regarding wellbeing alone… Moreover Justin RN & Angie Occupational Therapist also Rachel Physio Leanne PSW cultivated extraordinary bonds forged lasting memories made between themselves thus ensuring quality health allowed enjoyed fully right until very last breath taken today!
