The fiancée of a man discovered dead in the snow after a crash last week in Ottawa is remembering him as a caring father who put in long hours and was so close to being with his family again.
“He was almost home,” Loraleigh Bailey said about where her partner Cole Misner’s minivan went off the road on a country lane near the south Ottawa community of Vernon late Friday night.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario’s police oversight body, stated that Ottawa police were called at 11:30 p. m. that night regarding a vehicle rollover.
Officers did not find anyone inside or around the vehicle, according to the SIU, and then left the scene.
However, the next morning, an officer returned and discovered a deceased man nearby, buried under snow.
Bailey, 25, identified Misner, 24, as the individual found close to where the accident occurred, which is only about 13 kilometers from their home in Winchester.
Bailey and Misner had been together for years, had two children together, and were planning to marry this fall; all their future plans have now changed drastically.
“This was something completely unimaginable,” she expressed regarding Misner’s passing.
The young couple planned to eventually get a farm, Bailey says. (Loraleigh Bailey)

The SIU has confirmed that its investigation is still ongoing. The unit previously mentioned it’s looking into how Misner died because Ottawa police officers “may have been in and around the area at the time of [Misner’s] death.” Investigations often focus on whether police might face criminal charges if there’s been a death or serious injury involved. It’s common for an absence of information during early investigations to be followed months later by an extensive report detailing what transpired. Bailey said it’s tough not knowing when she’ll receive more information but acknowledges investigators have “a big job to do.” “I want the truth just as much as they do, if not more,” she stated. (Guy Quenneville/CBC) Bailey expressed deep gratitude for her family and friends’ support while navigating life forward as a single mother organizing her late partner’s funeral arrangements. Her two-year-old son and one-year-old daughter might be too young to fully understand what’s happening but they sense that something isn’t right, she mentioned. “They actually asked me for their dad last night when I put them to bed,” Bailey recalled. “I’m trying to piece things together so that when they’re older they can know who he was [and] know how much he loved them.”Bailey shared this photo of Misner with their first child.
