BARRIE – A series of accidents caused by severe weather resulted in the closure of a highway north of Toronto for several hours, including a significant pileup that Ontario Provincial Police report involved around two dozen vehicles.
According to OPP, the first incident on Highway 11 occurred at about 10:30 a. m. Friday, just north of Barrie, and included between 20 to 30 vehicles, along with two tractor trailers.
Police stated that minor injuries were reported, and firefighters quickly put out a vehicle fire.
A stretch of Highway 11 between Barrie and Orillia was shut down for several hours so emergency teams could clear the area and due to the harsh weather conditions.
Authorities mentioned that stranded drivers were taken to a nearby warming center.
The highway finally reopened at 6 p. m., with police noting that crews stayed on-site to fix damaged guardrails.
