Ontario Provincial Police report that they’ve responded to more than 50 collisions across the southwestern area since Sunday morning.

Authorities are advising residents in London to stay home on Sunday as a low-pressure system from the U. S. moves in, bringing along a significant winter storm.

“We’ve responded to 57 crashes and counting since 8 a. m.,” West Region OPP’s Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said on Sunday evening. “Roadways are still covered, they’re slick and slippery.”

Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for London, predicting snow accumulation between 10 to 15 centimeters before tapering off later tonight. Daytime temperatures will drop to around -23 C with wind chill, according to meteorologist Samantha Mauti.

“We’re expecting heavy snow at times throughout today and into the evening. The intensity of the snow should lessen slightly through the evening, but that’s probably just a bit before midnight,” she mentioned.

“But snow is expected to wrap up early tomorrow morning.”

A yellow warning typically indicates moderate impacts that are localized and temporary. Officials caution that dangerous weather conditions can lead to disruptions, urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads.

Avoid unnecessary travel, provincial police advise

Ontario Provincial Police in the West Region are also encouraging residents not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

“You might want to just stay off the roadways and stay home where you’re going to be safe,” Sanchuk stated in a video posted earlier on X.

If you must travel, Sanchuk advises keeping your headlights on, adjusting your speed based on weather conditions, and making sure you have enough gas and washer fluid. He emphasized being prepared for any sudden changes while driving.

“With blowing snow, you may encounter whiteout conditions with zero visibility,” he added, noting that drivers should follow detours if they come across closed roads for everyone’s safety.

Mauti also warned about blowing snow due to strong winds gusting at around 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. She mentioned there’s potential for flurries or snow squalls continuing from Monday morning into afternoon as well.

Flight cancellations and delays throughout Ontario

At London International Airport, numerous flights arriving from or departing for cities like Toronto and Calgary have been canceled or delayed because of the weather.

Other areas of the province face heavier snowfall too, including Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), which are under a more severe orange warning. The storm has led Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto canceling over half their flights on Sunday.

Mauti explained that this snowy weather comes from a low-pressure system originating in the U. S., affecting at least 500,000 people who’ve lost power while causing thousands of flight cancellations.>

“We are just kind of experiencing the northern edge of this system that’s moving through and impacting much of northeastern United States,” said Mauti.

“Generally speaking, further south means heavier snowfall; hence northern shores around Lake Ontario are receiving more snow.”>

The wintry mix follows an extreme cold snap that hit southwestern Ontario earlier over the weekend when temperatures fell below -30 C between Friday night into Saturday morning causing widespread cold warnings across various regions.

This situation arises after City officials indicated last Friday they’re feeling pressured due statewide shortages regarding road salt leading city crews needing adjustments made concerning winter maintenance operations.
