Police report that one young person is in custody while at least three others are still being sought following a jewelry store robbery in Oshawa.
Recently, there has been a series of smash-and-grab incidents targeting jewelry stores, particularly at Oshawa Centre. Most of the suspects involved are teenagers. (see below).
On Wednesday, January 21, at about 6:40 pm, officers from Central East Division responded to reports of a robbery at Oshawa Jewellery, located within the Oshawa Centre at 419 King Street West.
Three males entered the mall and made their way to the jewelry store where they broke display cases before escaping with stolen jewelry, according to police.
One suspect was caught in the mall and taken into custody. The other two managed to escape into a getaway vehicle. The suspect vehicle left the area before police arrived.
No customers or employees were physically harmed during the incident, police stated.
A 13-year-old boy from Hamilton faces charges of: Robbery, Disguise with Intent, and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000.
He has been held for a bail hearing.
At least three suspects remain unapprehended, according to police.
If anyone was in the mall or parking lot between 6:00 pm and 7:15 pm and has cellphone footage or information regarding this event is encouraged to reach out to law enforcement.
