You don’t need to leave the Greater Toronto Area to discover one of Canada’s most sought-after places to live. This delightful little town close to Toronto, famous for its picturesque streets and beautiful harbour views, has been recognized as one of the best spots in the country to call home.
We asked our readers on Narcity Canada’s Facebook page to share their favorite small towns in Canada, and this lakeside treasure in Ontario was among the top suggestions.
Just under an hour from Toronto, Oakville is a lakeside haven that provides a lovely atmosphere and stunning waterfront scenery.
According to Visit Oakville, the town features “picturesque harbours, vibrant shopping districts, active arts community and some of the best dining options in the Greater Toronto Area.”
Oakville’s downtown area is filled with charming boutiques and shops selling everything from clothing to home decor and jewelry, making it easy for you to enjoy shopping without heading into Toronto. There’s also plenty of entertainment available, such as a drive-in theatre, museums, festivals, and art galleries.
If you love being outdoors, you’ll find over 3,200 acres of parks and green spaces equipped with trails, pools, and recreational areas. You can take sunset strolls or have picnics by the water while enjoying summer beach days at Coronation Park and Bronte Beach Park.
In wintertime, you can explore snowy paths at Bronte Creek Provincial Park or skate at local ice rinks. Don’t miss out on Visit Oakville’s Taste of Oakville event featuring prix fixe menus at restaurants throughout the area.
With more than 200 eateries in town, Oakville offers a diverse food scene. From brunch spots with scenic views to cozy cafes and waterfront patios perfect for enjoying meals al fresco, there’s something for everyone here.
It’s also a smart choice for commuters since it has easy access to both VIA Rail and GO Transit.
However, living in Oakville does come with a higher price tag. According to RE/MAX, the cost of living “tends to be slightly higher than other areas in Ontario,” while Zolo reports that the median home price was around $1,381,057 as of January 2026.
Even so, those looking for a new place consider Oakville one of Canada’s best small towns.
