Two yellow weather alerts are currently in place for the Waterloo region and Guelph as Environment Canada warns about extremely cold temperatures and blowing snow that may affect travel and outdoor plans on Friday.
According to Environment Canada, flurries are expected on Friday, along with a chance of snow squalls in the afternoon and local blowing snow. The snowfall amounts in both Waterloo region and Guelph could reach up to 5 cm.
Strong winds might gust up to 50 km/h, with temperatures dropping to -18 C, while the wind chill could make it feel like -30 C by the afternoon, which raises concerns about frostbite, Environment Canada stated.
The blowing snow could lead to sudden visibility issues at times, especially in open areas, according to the warning.
“Travel will likely be hazardous due to near-zero visibility. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Road closures are possible. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

The “bitterly cold conditions” will continue throughout Friday and into Saturday. “Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” said Environment Canada’s warning. “Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes,” continued the release, adding that people should dress warmly to avoid frostbite, check on elderly relatives and friends, be mindful of how cold affects pets, and take breaks indoors if working outside. Areas in north Wellington County like Mount Forest and Arthur are under a yellow warning advisory due to strong winds and snowfall expected on Friday. The Ontario Provincial Police reported that Highway 6 between Mount Forest and Fergus was closed Friday morning because of “poor visibility, and deteriorating road conditions.” This area could see snowfall totals reaching up to 20 cm. Strong wind gusts of 60 km/h will contribute to low visibility from blowing snow. <p-Friday's weather has led both the Upper Grand District School Board and Wellington Catholic District School Board to close schools in north Wellington County. < Wellington-Dufferin Student Transportation Services has also canceled school buses in southern Wellington County as well as Dufferin County. < Exams planned for St. James Catholic Secondary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Secondary School in Guelph have been postponed. < Francobus has canceled routes in Oxford County as well as Kitchener-Waterloo too.
