Colleges in north Oshawa are excited about receiving over $9 million to improve their facilities at Durham College and Ontario Tech University.
Durham College will get an investment of $5,472,600 aimed at essential infrastructure upgrades, which include replacing the roof, upgrading the boiler, and improving HVAC systems.
This funding will also boost training capacity and enhance education in skilled trades and technology by introducing workforce-ready welding technologies, new equipment for Carpentry and Construction programs (like ladders, clamps, sanders, and routers), along with an autoclave to support Biotechnology and Environmental Technology programs.
“The Ontario government’s investment in Durham College will have a direct and meaningful impact on our students and communities, strengthening our ability to support sectors vital to the province’s economic growth,” said Durham College President Dr. Elaine Popp. “This funding ensures learners are training in state-of-the-art facilities with industry-standard equipment, preparing them to be workforce-ready on day one.”
Ontario Tech University will receive $3,574,100 for facility upgrades that include enhancing their Building Automation System, replacing HVAC systems, and installing a new heat pump. This investment will also facilitate the creation of a new Engineering Training Lab that offers more hands-on learning opportunities while bolstering skills training for students.
Ontario Tech President Dr. Steven Murphy noted that this funding would provide a “meaningful boost” allowing Ontario Tech University to continue offering sought-after STEM education.
“By renewing critical infrastructure and expanding our first-class engineering facilities for students, this funding will expand our hands-on training labs and strengthen the learning experience that our job ready graduates receive while we prepare them for Ontario’s future workforce needs.”
This investment is part of the government’s larger $242 million initiative aimed at upgrading classrooms and equipment across publicly funded colleges and universities throughout the province. Institutions can utilize this funding for significant upgrades to building systems as well as improvements to heating and ventilation systems alongside mechanical and electrical system enhancements. Additionally, funds may be allocated towards acquiring educational resources like updated computers or software for teaching purposes along with specialized equipment or machinery intended for use in labs or classrooms. As part of this shared responsibility framework within the capital infrastructure program, colleges and universities are required to contribute matching funds.
“In the face of economic uncertainty, Ontario’s world-class colleges and universities are integral to building and protecting Ontario’s future workforce,” said Ontario Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn. “Through this investment,(we) are ensuring that students have the modern tools and facilities they need to stay on the cutting edge of our critical industries in their future careers.”
Whitby MPP Lorne Coe mentioned that these funds would enhance Durham Region’s pipeline of highly skilled workers by guaranteeing students access to modern equipment along with top-notch learning environments necessary for acquiring skills relevant to well-paying jobs post-graduation.
“By upgrading classrooms, modernizing equipment, and expanding hands-on training opportunities , our government is ensuring local students graduate with the skillsand experience neededto succeedinindemand fields,” Coe stated. “This fundingwillstrengthenour regionalworkforce, supporteconomicgrowth, andhelpprotect Ontario’sfuture.”
