The Durham District School Board is working hard to find solutions for students after discovering that a new elementary school in west Whitby won’t be ready this September as planned.

Lisa Bianca, the board’s associate director of corporate services, informed trustees during the January 19 meeting that construction at the new school located at Limoges Drive and Cisco Drive began later than expected, resulting in the “difficult decision” to delay the opening by a month.

Bianca mentioned that staff are currently searching for temporary placements for students at other schools until the new facility opens.

“It is a relatively short delay, but every delay affects families.”

Families impacted by this change will receive notifications once an ongoing review of school boundaries has been finalized.

This new school at Maskell Crescent and Coronation Road will open on time in September while another new school in Whitby will be delayed a month.

Another elementary school in west Whitby and a high school in north Oshawa are still set to open as scheduled this September.

Bianca provided an update to trustees on all upcoming schools, noting that the province has granted approval for eight schools to open (or have already opened) between last September and 2028.

Two of those projects – one high school in Whitby and another elementary school in Oshawa – are expected to begin construction in spring, “as soon as the snow will allow,” Bianca said.
