According to Kingston Police, officers were called to the scene regarding “a smash and grab theft” at the Michael Hill location in the mall. The incident happened around 12:30 p. m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026. A ‘smash and grab’ involves a suspect breaking glass from a display case or window, seizing items behind it, and then fleeing.

Constable Anthony Colangeli, Media Relations Officer for Kingston Police, informed Kingstonist that a single male suspect ran away on foot after committing the theft, got into a vehicle, and “was last seen driving away from the mall” heading northbound.

No injuries occurred as a result of this incident, with police clarifying that it was classified as theft rather than robbery since no violence or weapons were involved nor were any threats made.

Witnesses reported that both Michael Hill and Boathouse stores – located opposite each other on the upper level of the mall – shut down immediately afterward. Other jewelry retailers nearby followed suit shortly thereafter.

The Kingston Police couldn’t specify what items were taken from Michael Hill or their worth. Constable Colangeli mentioned that both the Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification Unit remained on-site investigating as of 1:20 p. m.

“[The] investigation is ongoing,” Colangeli said.
