The epicentre was southeast of Orillia and was felt as far east as Belleville.

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake shook central and southern Ontario late Tuesday night.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the tremor struck at 10:59 p. m., with its epicentre about 23 kilometres southeast of Orillia, at a depth of five kilometres.

Social media quickly lit up with accounts of the shaking, and some mentioned hearing a roar or loud bang.

Earthquakes Canada logged over 2,600 reports from locations stretching from Kitchener in the west to Belleville in the east, including Toronto and the Niagara region. Alex Lamore was one of many locals who posted on Facebook asking, “So whole else just experienced a house shake?”

Lamore described the experience as initially unsettling.

He noted that this earthquake is consistent with what central Ontario has been experiencing lately.

Earthquakes Canada stated that this area has seen two similar-sized quakes over the past 25 years, plus a magnitude 5.5 quake back in 1929.
