Two police cars from Saugeen Shores were declared unusable after being struck by a driver suspected of driving a stolen vehicle.
The event took place on Thursday evening when officers received reports about a stolen car possibly heading towards Saugeen Shores.
Around 9 p. m., an officer on patrol noticed the suspect vehicle moving south through Southampton. The officer had to move onto the shoulder of the road to avoid a head-on collision with the vehicle. The driver then reportedly continued driving recklessly towards Port Elgin.
Later, another officer encountered the suspect vehicle and observed as the driver allegedly ignored several traffic signals at controlled intersections.
The suspect’s car was found at a gas station in downtown Port Elgin when officers tried to box it in. The driver reportedly shifted into reverse, crashing into one of the marked police cruisers at high speed before accelerating forward and hitting the other marked police vehicle.
One of the officers sustained minor injuries during this incident.
“Both police vehicles received heavy damage due to the collisions and were rendered inoperable,” said a statement from Saugeen Shores police. “The suspect vehicle was able to exit the lot in a very dangerous manner without care or concern of any other vehicles on the roadway or pedestrians in the area.”
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been informed about this situation since the vehicle fled in a direction outside police jurisdiction. Saugeen Shores police mentioned that OPP is taking over the investigation as they are the originating agency involved.
More details will be shared by OPP as they become available.
