A 62-year-old man from Brampton has admitted his guilt in a U. S. federal court in Los Angeles on Thursday for leading a criminal group that was involved in bringing $17 million worth of methamphetamine and cocaine into Canada.

According to U. S. officials, Guramrit Sidhu is the main defendant in a 23-count federal indictment issued in January 2024 that charged 19 individuals for their alleged involvement in this organized crime network, including Roberto Scoppa, a man from Montreal who authorities say is a significant Canadian trafficker and linked to the Italian Mafia.

The court presented a statement of facts indicating that from September 2020 to February 2023, Sidhu was responsible for smuggling drugs from the United States into Canada.

“After buying the bulk quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the U. S., Sidhu arranged for the narcotics’ transportation into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution,” the U. S. Attorney’s Office in California said. “Sidhu and co-conspirators then retrieved the cocaine and methamphetamine from locations within Canada for further distribution.”

Sidhu pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. He is set to be sentenced on July 9, facing at least 20 years up to life imprisonment in federal custody.

Others involved who have already pleaded guilty have received sentences ranging from 27 months to 108 months.
